IBL project status and some aspects for studying bentonite long-term behaviour related to deformation was presented at the BEACON final meeting focusing on the results of bentonite mechanical evolution. Natural bentonites offer opportunity to study also the mechanical aspects of bentonite stability. IBL project preliminary results we discussed in two meetings during 2019, EuroClay 2019 in Paris, France and NAWG-16 in Yamagata, Japan. The publications coming from these conferences are updated on this website as they are available. For the year 2020, presentations at Clay Conference 2020 in Nancy, France are to be expected in June.
Last week sampling of several interesting bentonite beds was undertaken underground where we could enjoy nice warm temperatures and shelter from the snow at the surface. We are happy to inform you that the very first sampling campaign starts during the 3rd week of January 2019. Four boreholes are planned to be drilled underground to sample some of the most interesting bentonite beds. This will be the first time, bentonites will be studied at depths relevant to repositories.
