International Bentonite Longevity (IBL) project starts first sampling campaign

We are happy to inform you that the very first sampling campaign starts during the 3rd week of January 2019. Four boreholes are planned to be drilled underground to sample some of the most interesting bentonite beds. This will be the first time, bentonites will be studied at depths relevant to repositories. What makes Tsukinuno bentonites such a good analogue to repository bentonites is their top quality (high montmorillonite content) and similarly high density. During the project new data will be produced on petrography, physical and chemical properties of these clays.

Stay tuned for more updates as the project proceeds.
